Stretching the back muscles
Over 60-70% of the general population will suffer from back problems through out their lives. (Lundberg). There are many things that can cause us to develop back pains such as: Improper lifting, excessive weight, and improper posture. There are also many things that prevent chronic back pain such as exercise, stretching the back muscles, and practicing good posture. In addition to self-prevention, chiropractors also use several techniques to help relieve back problems.
Improper lifting can cause major back damage. In some situations pain perception is reduced and “bodily signals of work overload are reduced and the risk of straining the back is increased” (Lundberg). Spine-Health.com noted that major back injuries occur when people incorrectly lift heavy objects. This is especially true when they use their backs instead of their legs. (Spine-Health)
Excessive weight can also cause chronic back pains. Jason Highsmith, spine specialist and author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Back Pain” noted that those who have large abdomens will worsen back problems, “ A Large abdomen distributes weight too far in front of the spine and affects alignment. To compensate, most people “hyperlordose” their spine which forms sway back. Extra weight overloads the discs and the facets” (Bodybuilding.com). Extra body weight can cause added stress on the spine, which can lead to back problems.
Today society uses many different types of electronic devices such as tablets, phones, and laptops. Most of these devices require a bent neck and other forms of poor posture. “Walk through any public space and observe the majority of humans with heads angled down, shoulders crimped, checking email, voicemail and text messages while engaging with an almost infinite number of other apps and services” (Running & FitNews). Because of these activities, people can develop poor posture and back pain.
