To relieve their spine of the stress
Lastly, another common way people develop back problems is due to excessive periods of sitting on the job, at home or during a commute. Poor ergonomic set ups are also a contributing factor to back pain for individuals who spend vast amounts of time sitting. It is not uncommon for a worker’s chair to fit improperly and lack lumbar support or for a work area set up to cause the worker to put more strain on their neck to view a computer screen or read necessary documents. People who perform most of their work while sitting do not take the necessary stretching breaks to relieve their spine of the stress from sitting for extended periods of time. Most people are unaware of the need for movement in order for the intervertebral disc to obtain nutrients. In today’s society kids are spending more time inside on the computer and playing video games which leads to faulty posture and added stress on the spine.
I will take all of the possible steps and precautions to prevent myself from experiencing chronic back pain. In order to achieve this goal I will continue to work out properly, making sure that I continue to strengthen my core specifically. In addition, I will continue to do full body workouts that involve cardio, strengthening, plyometrics, and agility to make sure that I maintain optimal performance in these areas and to prevent from subjecting myself to a higher risk of injury when participating in sports such as basketball and flag football. In addition to being physically active I will be sure to maintain a healthy diet to keep off excessive weight in order to prevent increasing weight around my abdominals; which would add more stress on my spine. I will also execute the proper lifting techniques that I have learned when lifting any object. For example, I will reduce the horizontal distance between the object and myself and bend my knees to pick up heavy loads. Lastly, I will be sure to be mindful of proper posture throughout my day. Currently as a student I spend a vast amount of time sitting and I will continue to make a conscious effect to train my body and mind to execute proper posture. As I go through life I will keep posture and ergonomics in the forefront of my mind when completing any task. I will be mindful to take microbreaks when sitting for periods of time and use that time to stretch.
Chiropractors treat back pain through the use of various techniques. Most of the treatment administered to patients is in the form of spinal manipulation, manual manipulation, and mobilization2. Chiropractors use techniques such as the Logan Basic Technique which is used to alleviate headaches and lower back pain. It also helps to release tension and restore balance. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation also known as high velocity low amplitude thrust to treat back pain. This manipulation is characterized by an audible “pop” as the chiropractor uses their hand to apply force in a particular direction3. Spinal mobilizations are used for patients that require a gentler approach. In addition to these techniques chiropractors educate their patients on nutrition and exercise for a comprehensive treatment.
